The 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour ventured to its first stop in Queensland today, Thursday, 12 August, to offer the sunny state an opportunity to see the coveted trophy, valued at more than $150,000.
To connect the Melbourne Cup story to local champions, Mel Schumacher, who rode Baystone to Melbourne Cup victory in 1958, joined the crew as a Tour Ambassador for the first time.
The Cup featured at Borders Brisbane, where Mel signed copies of the recently released The Story of the Melbourne Cup: Australia’s Greatest Race.
The coffee-table book of racing essays, illustrations and images also includes the celebrated 24 Runners in The Greatest Cup Never Run.
The book has received impressive reviews, Brisbanites lined up for their chance to get Mel’s autograph and have their photo taken with the 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy.
Mel then escorted the trophy to an in-studio interview at 4BC, where he took listeners on a historical journey, reflecting on some of the most memorable moments of his career and focusing on his Melbourne Cup win as a highlight.
The Cup then featured at the VRC’s inaugural Melbourne Cup Business Network event in Brisbane at the Marriott. Guests were thrilled to see the coveted trophy and were entertained by 1999 Melbourne Cup winning jockey, John Marshall, and 1999 Melbourne Cup winning owner, Wendy Green’s, amazing reflections of claiming victory in the ‘race that stops a nation’ TM.
